Object Movement Puppetry Festival is an annual presentation of new short works developed in residence at The Center at West Park. * Recipient of a Jim Henson Foundation Production Grant (2021) Ensemble: Sam Jay Gold, Harrison Greene, Jenny Hann, Esme Roszel, Zack Perez, Sarah Walsh, Clay Westman, and Christopher Williams This dynamic, family-friendly production involving over 480 handmade puppets and described by Le Monde as bursting with “breathtaking fireworks of creativity” was presented to sold out audiences at Brooklyn Academy of Music in March 2022. Adapted from the Shahnameh (the national epic of Persia written over 1,000 years ago), Song of the North is created and directed by 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Hamid Rahmanian, and the original score is written and orchestrated by Loga Ramin Torkian, featuring vocalist Azam Ali. Our female hero uses her superpowers to rescue her beloved from a perilous predicament, and to prevent a war. Song of the North is a mesmerizing large-scale, cinematic performance combining the manual art of shadow puppetry with projected animation to tell the courageous tale of Princess Manijeh, a heroine from ancient Persia. Her work has also been featured in multiple art shows and solo shows and was the Artist-In-Residence at Artspace in New Haven, CT. She is Workshop Chair for the 2023 Puppeteers of America National Puppet Festival: New in 2023 – workshops in Español! Her upcoming autobiographical show, Sueños, is the recipient of a 2022 Jim Henson Foundation Workshop /events/vp-wmi-song-of-the-north-hamid-rahmanian Her strong background in art, dance, writing, fiber and fabrication all come together seamlessly with her love for puppetry. She has trained at the National Puppetry Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, designed puppets for The Dramatic Question Theater, Yale, performed at Dixon Place, Lyric Hall, Black Cherry Puppet Theater, Ballard Institute & Museum of Puppetry, festivals, puppet slams, toured her full length production “Calle Allende” and is the founder and curator of The Pinned & Sewtured Puppet Cabaret (2014). Her short films “Heart-Felt” and “The Moment Has Yet To Come” premiered at the 2019 & 2017 Reel Puppetry Film Festival at the Puppeteers of America National Puppet Festival. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Puppet Arts from the University of Connecticut, and a BA in English / Creative Writing from Hunter College. This workshop will cover 2D needle felting techniques (wool paintings, backdrops) as well as 3D felting. A needle felting crash course that walks you through the basics with some advanced techniques.
